Set Wi-Fi Name & Password
How to securely customize your SSID (Wi-Fi network name) and set up highly secure passwords.
Leaving your home router configured with factory default network names (SSID) and factory passwords leaves your network vulnerable to unauthorized bandwidth theft and eavesdropping. Changing your network SSID and configuring strong WPA2 or WPA3 security encryption is one of the most impactful security improvements you can make.
1 Navigating to the Wireless Settings Menu
After logging into your router admin dashboard (e.g. 192.168.1.1), locate the wireless menu in the sidebar or top navigation bar. Depending on firmware, look for one of these standard section headers:
2 Understanding Dual-Band SSID Naming Strategies
Single SSID for 2.4G & 5G
Both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios share the exact same SSID name and password. The router automatically steers modern devices to the fastest band.
Separate SSIDs (e.g. Home_2.4G & Home_5G)
Gives you direct manual control. Ideal if smart home accessories (smart bulbs, robot vacuums) fail to connect to unified dual-band signals.
3 Selecting the Right Security Encryption
| Security Mode | Security Rating | Encryption Cipher | Recommended Usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| WPA3-Personal (SAE) | Maximum | AES-GCM 128/256 | Best security against brute-force attacks. Compatible with modern phones & laptops. |
| WPA2-PSK (AES) | High (Standard) | AES-CCMP | Universal standard. 100% compatible with all smart home devices, gaming consoles, and TVs. |
| WPA2 / WPA3 Mixed | Optimal Blend | AES / SAE Hybrid | Allows WPA3 devices to connect securely while maintaining backwards compatibility for older gear. |
| WEP / WPA-TKIP | Deprecated / Insecure | RC4 / TKIP | NEVER USE. Can be cracked in seconds and caps Wi-Fi speed at 54 Mbps. |
How to Create an Uncrackable Wi-Fi Passphrase
Instead of using short complex strings like P@$$w0rd! which are vulnerable to dictionary attacks, use the Four Random Words Method (e.g. Falcon-Silver-Coffee-Rocket99). This produces over 60 bits of cryptographic entropy, is easy to dictate to family members, and takes modern GPUs centuries to crack.
What Happens After You Click "Save & Apply"?
When you save your new SSID and password, your router Wi-Fi radios will restart for 5 to 10 seconds. All wirelessly connected devices will immediately disconnect. Open Wi-Fi settings on your phone, laptop, and TV, select your new network name, and enter your new password to reconnect.
