Connect Router Wires

Comprehensive instructions to connect your modem, router, and Ethernet cables with zero errors.

Setting up the physical wiring correctly is the foundational step of every home network. Over 65% of all router setup errors and "No Internet" warnings are caused by misplaced Ethernet cables, loose RJ45 connectors, or improper power startup sequences. Follow this complete hardware walkthrough to establish a solid physical link between your broadband modem and router.

Pre-Flight Checklist: Before You Plug In

Turn off and unplug the power cable from your internet modem. If your modem has an internal backup battery, slide off the battery door and remove the battery temporarily. This forces the modem to clear its previous hardware lock and prepare for a fresh DHCP handshake with your new router.

Bridge the Modem to the Router WAN Port

Take an Ethernet cable (Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6a). Insert one end into the Ethernet / LAN Out port on your standalone modem. Insert the other end directly into the yellow, blue, or distinct WAN / Internet port on the back of your router. Listen for an audible "click" sound ensuring the RJ45 locking clip is firmly engaged.

Power Up the Modem First & Wait for Synchronization

Plug your modem back into the electrical outlet. Allow 2 to 3 full minutes for the modem to register with your internet service provider (ISP). Watch the modem front lights: the Power, Downstream, Upstream, and Online / Internet LEDs must transition from blinking to a steady, solid green or white state before proceeding.

Connect Power to the Router

Plug the router OEM power supply adapter into the 12V DC power jack on the rear panel, then connect the wall plug to a surge-protected outlet. If your router has a rocker power switch, toggle it to the "ON" (I) position. The system power light will turn on.

Allow Internal Firmware Boot (90–120 Seconds)

During the first boot, the router initializes its routing processor, assigns the internal subnet, and boots its dual-band Wi-Fi radios. Do not press any buttons or unplug cables during this stabilization window.

(Optional) Connect Wired PC to LAN Port 1

If you are configuring from a desktop computer, connect a secondary Ethernet patch cable from your computer Ethernet port to any numbered LAN port (1, 2, 3, or 4). A wired connection is highly recommended for the initial configuration.

4 Critical Hardware Mistakes to Avoid

  • Plugging into a LAN port instead of the WAN port: The modem cable MUST go into the dedicated WAN / Internet socket. If plugged into LAN 1, the router cannot route external data.
  • Powering on the router before the modem: If the router starts before the modem completes its ISP handshake, the router fails to acquire an IP address and displays an amber light.
  • Using old Cat5 cables: Standard Cat5 cables are capped at 100 Mbps. Ensure your patch cables are marked Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6a for full gigabit (1000 Mbps) speeds.
  • Enclosing the router in metal cabinets: Do not place the router inside metal media enclosures, behind dense televisions, or on the floor.
